Sail News for May 5, 2010 - by David Cook

Hi VMSS Sailors and Regional IOM Sailors,

For sailors outside Victoria, you may be interested in the regional events mentioned further below. Sorry for combining a local and regional update together. Please disregard or read what's going on in Victoria.

This Sunday is Mothers Day but at least Barry and I will be going sailing. We're keen to get in some always-needed on-water practice time. We'll be arriving at close to 1230 so I hope others can make it too.

Last Sunday we had 4 boats, Barry, Dave, Jan and myself and conditions were challenging but good. The racing was close all the time with lots of passing back and forth with Jan being the guy to beat and it didn't happen very often. The rest of us took turns at nipping at his heels.

Rumour has it there might be another maiden voyage coming up very soon. Ian, a neighbour/friend of Steve has been working hard over the past months at completing his Sweat Equity Vektor, hull and deck built by Lawrie Neish. Ian has built bigger boats before and from the little bit that Ian's shared at lakeside, he's quite the craftsman and perfectionist. With all these talented builders launching their boats recently our IOM fleet is on growth spurt. News Flash...Ian's Vektor launched May 6.

Attached is a progress report photo of Adrian Harrison's plug of Brad Gibson's latest design called 'Reggae'. If you want to build using Adrian's mold, let him know. Adrian comes down to the lake most Sundays now that he's gotten the 'bug'. With permission I took the liberty of sharing Adrian's photo and one of my HAMNF BECK DOG and sent them to famous yacht designer Bruce Kirby for an evaluation. Bruce thinks both will be fast with Reggae doing better upwind and mine downwind. I've also attached a photo of mine so you can do your own comparison. Any similarities?

The next and final event of the Spring All Islands Series is next Sunday, May 16th starting at 1030. The location has been changed from Cameron Lake due to not having a large enough safety/rescue/mark boat and the lake is over 500ft deep. I've offered to use our property at Robinson Lake in Black Creek, between Courtenay and Campbell River.
From VMSS Barry, Robb and I are signed up to go on the Yahoo Group database. If anyone else can make, it's well worth the 3 hour car ride. The guys from Hornby Island are so good at traveling south all the time so it would be nice if others could reciprocate. If you can go, let Barry know if you would like to carpool. Please sign up on Yahoo or let Barry or myself know if you can make it. A map to Robinson Lake is on the Yahoo Group under 'where we sail'.

Mark Sunday, May 30th on your calendar as the 3rd of 6 events VMSS Handicap Sailing Championship Series. From the feedback I've had from others, the staggered starts really makes the racing more interesting...it gives the boats who don't normally lead a chance to do so and challenges the faster boats to sail through the fleet if they are to do well.

Also mark June, 4,5, & 6th on your calendar which is the Western Canadian IOM Championships being held at Saltspring Island Sailing Club. To date there are 13 entries received with some half a dozen or so from Washington and Oregon. It would be great to see and race against Allan and Nigel from the lower mainland again.
I hope to see you this Sunday or next weekend.

Cheers

David Cook
